Il n’y aura plus d’éléphant

“And all of a sudden, ba da boom!” This morning, Maxime refuses to get dressed, to brush his teeth, to eat. Maxime doesn’t want to leave. It’s better to stay in his room, dreaming of African elephants and playing with his memories. Memories of a simpler time spent squabbling with his best friend, a multicolored elephant called Balourd. And yet, it’s time to leave. But how can we when we don’t know what’s waiting for us on the other side of the door? When you know that African elephants are threatened with extinction? How do you leave… without Balourd?

Rooted both in the intimacy of a room cluttered with toys and in the African landscapes trodden by the great pachyderms, Il n’y aura plus d’éléphant is an immersive show that plunges us into the imagination of a child who must learn to accept the unknown and change. It’s an ode to courage and resilience. Presented in Tortue Berlue’s theater bus, Il n’y aura plus d’éléphant was one of three productions nominated by the Association québécoise des critiques de théâtre in 2022 in the “Best young audience show” category.

Tortue Berlue was founded in 2015 by actress and puppeteer Caroline Gendron, who wanted to independently produce and distribute original theatrical creations for young children. In less than two years, Caroline bought a used bus and transformed it into a mobile performance space using whatever resources she could find, then wrote and directed her first production, Jérémie a un lion. Seven years later, the company has four bus productions under its belt – two of which were nominated for Critics’ Choice awards – operates a new bus-theatre, launching in 2021, employs four cultural workers and collaborates with some twenty artists each year.
